Class Work
Activity #1: Peer Editing of the introductory essay.
You will have three editors. Sign your name at the top of the rubric and attach it to your draft.
Editor #1 will read for content.
Editor #2 will read for clarity
Editor #3 will read for grammar, usage, and mechanics. (GUM)

Review the comments. Revise your draft. Post the final copy in CANVAS. It is due October 24, 2017 at 7:00 am.

. Enter the time machine and travel back to the late 19th Century and early 20th Century.

A. Silently read the story. Then work with a partner and  create a mind map for Mrs. Mallard (Listen for the instructions.  Paper will be provided.)

B. Discussion to follow . . . What really killed Mrs. Mallard? Find lines in the story that prove your point.

C. Table Activity: The Name Game - How important are names in a story.? Find the meanings of the names of the characters from "The Story of an Hour."
To begin, look up information about mallard ducks. What do the ducks and Mr. and Mrs. Mallard have in common, if anything?

Activity #4
A.  What yellow things are in "The Yellow Wallpaper?"Take out your lists/highlighted pages and at your table discuss how the "yellow" changed in the story. Go through it page by page. Write comments for each page on the paper provided. Be sure you names appear at the top of the page.

B. How might the story have been different if the wall paper had been a different color?
  • Select a color for your table to consider. Each table must have a different color.
  • Research that color. (5 minute activity)
  • Compose a list of 10 changes you might expect if the wallpaper had been a different color.
  • Do this on the discussion A sheet.

Activity #5 - This activity will be done on Tuesday.

Now that you have read the short story, do you think the protagonist was suffering a mental breakdown, or was she the victim of something supernatural? What evidence exists to support your point of view?

  • Look back at "The Yellow Wallpaper" and make a list of all of the gothic items presented in the story
  • OR
  • Make a list of actions and words that suggest that the protagonist was unstable and/or suffering from illness,

View the PBS movie of the short story of "The Yellow Wallpaper.".(We will begin in class.) Be the critic.

  • Rate each segment.
  • What do you like about it?
  • What is weak?
  • If you were the director, what would you change?
Finish viewing for homework.  Post your ratings, reactions, and changes in Canvas. Be sure to label the segments.

 Conduct some investigative reporting on post-partum depression, depression in general, and the treatment of both types in the late 1800s and early 1900s.Consult at least two sources.
