3.  Problem/Solution - a way to organize for writing . . .

What are the causes of the problem? What are the effects? This should explain why there is a need for a solution.

Think of this as writing in three parts.

A. Prove there is a problem. Provide some history of the problem. What were the causes?
B. Because the problem exists, what are the effects? How is life changed because of the problem? How many are impacted?
C. What are the solutions? Why will YOUR solution work. What are the benefits? How will life be different if the problem is solved?

Don't forget about art! Find a work of art that illustrates your "war/barrier" topic.

Looking at Art -
  • What is the title of the work? How does the title help you to understand the message? What is the message?
  • What is the most obvious image in the work. To where is your eye drawn?
  • Look at the colors. Are they symbolic? Would the message be different if the colors were different? Explain.
  • Study the shading and shadowing. How do these elements impact the overall message?
  • Who is the artist? When was the work created? Is the artist's message about a specific event in the history of war? What was going on in the world when the work was created? Is the art universal - speaks to people of all times and in all places in all wars, or is it limited to the audience for whom it was created?
  • How does the work relate war  in the 20th and 21st centuries?

  • For homework, post the art or a link to it in canvas. Be ready to talk to the class about the work. Use the questions a guide for the information you will share. Also, be ready to expain why the work of art illustrates your topic.

Homework
Find a war movie to view.
Select a "war movie" to view and review. This assignment is due a week from today.

By Thursday, conduct some research and find a movie of interest to you. Keep in mind that some war movies are oldies but goodies. Others are recent award-winning films. The war depicted in the movie may be real or imagined. (Think Star Wars, War of the Worlds, or Avatar, for example.) Be ready to share your selection in class and explain why that movie is of interest to you.
Keep in mind that many movies are available on YouTube and other media sites such a Hulu or Amazon Prime. You do not need to spend money on this assignment unless you choose to do so. I suspect that your friends and relatives have old relic CDs, DVDs, and even VHS tapes.
On Thursday, we will study movie reviews and get ready to write one.
By Thursday, post the title of your selection along with a paragraph or two explaining your choice.

October 4 2018 - Tuesday / now Thursday

Hopefully, you received the notice from EMCC that the campus closed at noon on Tuesday due to the flooding and rain. This is now Thursday's blog! Enjoy your extra time.

Class Work

1. We will continue with the "wall" presentations. If you were not here on Thursday, please see me for a rubric and for a note sheet. All others, please continue with the notes on Thursday's sheet.

2. Return to your "war songs" group. Your group has time today to coordinate efforts.

Here are the instructions:
List all names on the first slide.
One person will post. The rest will simply list the name of the person who posted in the Canvas space.
Assignments;
As a group, study the lyrics. Pick one to study and share.

  • Select one song to share. Post the lyrics. (10 points) For example, in the Revolutionary War, "Yankee Doodle" was a very popular song. During the Civil War, "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" was a favorite. During the Viet Nam war, many popular songs on the radio became the anthems of the war.
  • Be ready to play or share the song.
  • Identify the war/time period/location of when the song was popular. (Post) 30 points) Feel free to create a brief PowerPoint or Prezi show of 3-5 slides. (Not all battles are fought with guns, airplanes, arrows, or tanks.)
  • Share the message. (Post and be prepared to share in class on Tuesday.) (10 points) Everybody must say something!
What is the message about war or battles? What is the tone of the message?

Homework:

You have one to two pages to write about a hero. In addition, locate a quotation that best fits your hero. Use that quotation as the title of your "hero" page. Please introduce your hero to the reader. Explain what the hero has done. That will help to tell why that person has the title of hero in your mind.

This may be about someone you personally know or about someone you admire but have never met.

Use regular 11 or 12 size font. Use regular margins - default is fine.

Post in Canvas by Tuesday, Oct. 9. 2018.
